Ratko Mladic ble pågrepet tidligere i år

Når vi leser om Jugoslavia i Historie 10, lærer vi blant annet om den grusome hendelsen i Srebrenica. Side 66 står det at FN og NATO fortsatt jakter på den serbiske generalen Ratko Mladic. Her har det vært en utvikling siden boken ble skrevet. Mladic ble pågrepet tidligere i år. Han er siktet for å ha gitt ordre om massakeren. Du kan lese mer hos NRK.

Reading/Book suggestion

As you all know, reading English books is a good way to improve your vocabulary and develop fluency. There are two things you should concider when choosing a book.

(1) Find a book you will enjoy reading so that the reading experience will be a good one. As I have mentioned in class, reading is the best way for you to expand your vocabulary at this point in your learning process, and it is a good way for you to keep up your English skills after you finish school. We want you to want to read! Therefore, you should consider your interests when you choose.

(2) Choose a book that is at the right level of difficulty. It is important that you do not need to look up words all the time, but in order for you to expand your vocabulary, there still needs to be words you do not know already. Read through one or two pages of the books you are considering. If you get "the big picture", but there are some words you do not know, well, then this could be the book for you!

If you would like a recommendation, ask me or Mikkel at the library. I have one suggestion for you right now as well. This is a book I read this summer which I truly enjoyed. It is also highly relevant to our topic in English class right now, and would give you a lot to talk about if you got this topic on your oral exam.

The novel Brooklyn by Colm Toibin is about a young immigrant making a life for herself in Brooklyn, New York. The story starts in her home country Ireland, and follows her on her journey across the Atlantic. It is a book about family, friendship, love and adventure, and it gives you a good impression of what it was like to live in both New York and Ireland in the 1950s. The main character, Eilis, is in a way caught between these two worlds, and in the end has to decide where she would like to continue her life.

You can find more information about the main character, Eilis, and the plot in this review. If you would like to read excerpts there are several online, for instans here and here.

Good luck with your readings!
